Martin: Yes it is, these oddly shaped flyers don't lend themselves well to scanning and the return address was in a very small font. I'm working on reordering the images with this insufferable Typepad editor.
As far as amount of text...keep in mind that turnout in April will probably be 20% or so. With an electorate that narrow, which are sometimes called "readers" in the consulting world, a campaign might add a few extra words to a direct mail piece because the audience is more likely to read it.
It's a judgement call, but your blanket statement is off base.
Then again, you think you know what you're talking about, and Dave actually does.
Nice work! This is a great piece. Attacks have been and will be perfected in this County. It is a shame that we are so good at murduring each other and so bad at getting anything done. Congrats to Gilliard for being able to shatter Republican campaigns. Why don't you try using your talents against Democrats! It is hard enough being a Republican in California...it is even harder to be a Republican in Orange County. No wonder we are and will continue to be in the minority. I keep hearing this argument...we are a donor county, we get 7 cents back for evey dollar that we send to Sac. and cities like San Fransisco get back 85 cents for every dollar,Guess why? The Dems have power! We can be the most Republican County, but what does that get us? As long as we continue to hamstring effective leaders and Dems keep beating us on the same stupid issues...i.e. Loretta Sanchez....Umberg...Dunn! This climate is run by overzealous consultants protecting the only pot of gold that there is in the state...Republican, rich, gullible OC. All of our yelling has created: deep devisions between idiologically similar elected officials, non-electable statewide candidates, and a climate of adversarial competition amongst public officials that are supposedly on the same team. Who's the real winner here? Dave Gilliard and the Democractic Party. When is the last time GBA ran a contested race against a Dem. (Don't say the recall because all he did was collect sigs!)
I like the mailing just fine and I think the point of the mailing and the great campaign message Diane is running, that a few commenters are missing, is this: Diane Harkey is a conservative, and Tom Harman is a liberal.
We have seen this college tuition issue used in several recent campaigns. This Harkey piece is a more sophisticated, and I think more effective, approach to the issue. Instead of making it about “handouts for illegal aliens” as other campaigns have done, this mailer turns the issue into one of fairness for Americans. The use of a BW photo on the front and a more subtle typestyle was also effective.
If Harman’s people understand what just happened to them, they will realize they have suffered a very deep and devastating cut, rather than a simple blow to the midsection.
I cannot believe Diane Harkey is repudiating John Campbell, one of her supporters.
This attack piece begs the question - what did Harkey to to oppose AB 540 (Firebaugh) in 2001? Did she write a published letter opposing it? Did she admonish then-Assemblymember John Campbell for voting for it as well?
If she feels so strongly about this particular issue, then she must have been a Gilchrist for Congress donor and volunteer.
If not, then she's a political opportunist.
Tom Harman voted repeatedly against granting illegals drivers licenses and he supported the Cal Border Police Initiave.
But, since Harkey has no real record of her own on which to stand prior to last year, we can count on more of these negative, opportunistic attacks.
So, it seems you don't dispute the facts in the mailer, you just don't like Diane Harkey. Plus, I remember getting a mailer from Harkey supporting the Border Police. I heard not a peep for Harman.
I must say that I like the piece. I am going somewhat off topic, but does anyone know if anyone has sued over the issue of different tuition rates for in state and out of state students? I remember when California lost in its attempt to pay different welfare benefits to new residents that we lost on a 14th amendment issue. At the time people said out of state tuition rates would meet the same fate. That did not happen apparently.
Does anyone know why?
"Harman endorsed the initiative". Big deal. At least Harkey put up some green. This mailer is one of the best hits I've seen, and I only read the hit pieces. Puffs bore me.
Racist ! Is my first thought I wonder who cleans her home, office and who works on her Landscaping and at her husbands office doing the labor dirty work ? Yet she takes "Dirty Money" from her husbands firm ? from dishonest Builders who are under Federal and State Investigations ? who threaten people with harm if they tell the truth to the authorities ? and then I see some of her big supporters hire illegals to do labor work ? yet she takes there money $$ I call it corruption and money laundering to say the least, she belongs in the same Cell as " Duke"
I like the general idea but it is too wordy. Harkey should hire better graphic artist.

ummm...yeah....she should hire someone better than dave gilliard?....yeah, dave hasn't been very successful with his mail in orange county....

Is this officially from the Harkey campaign? I can't make out the "Paid by..." line.

Posted by: | February 21, 2006 at 02:57 PM

Posted by: stupid | February 21, 2006 at 03:00 PM
Didn't Dave also defend Rep. Campbell's vote on this very same issue? Ironic.

Stop the inside baseball and take a deep breath. The mailer is, in a word, devastating.
The vote was, and remains, indefensible. What in the world was Harman thinking when he voetd for this?
Posted by: Roastedredpeppers | February 21, 2006 at 03:43 PM
Roasted Red Peppers - Yes! And let's take it one step further, what were all these Republicans thinking when they voted for AB 540 -
John Campbell
Lynn Daucher
Tom Harman
Tim Leslie
Abel Maldonado
Bob Pacheco

Don't forget AB1197 in 20-00 which was also a Firebaugh bill and did the same thing. You have to add:
Baugh
Kaloogian
Strickland
Ashburn

and these Senators:
Margett
McPherson

Jubal....those are much cleaner copies...almost as if you had a pdf rather than just scanning in a piece!

i can't wait for the hit piece on Tom Harman's gay, illegal alien, Matricula Consular card holding, traffic congesting, tax raising love child...

Any Republican that voted to give illegals tuition benefits is not fit to hold any office in my opinion, but you guys knew that already about me.

At first glance, the direct mail looks like some sort of Rape prevention piece rather than illegal immigrant tuition piece.

It is an effective piece. Dave does indeed know what he is doing. Shame on the Republican legislators who supported AB1197 and AB 1197.

"I remember getting a mailer from Harkey supporting the Border Police."
That's because Harkey paid $10,000 to be a "chair" and her chief political consultant also ran the CalBorder Police drill.
Harman endorsed the initiave.
And I don't have anything against Harkey, bt she clearly has issues with John Campbell's position on AB 540.
It's a shame Harkey had to attack Campbell like that.
