Wayne Eggleston Apologizes For Stanton Remark, Says He Was Misquoted
San Clemente Councilman Wayne Eggleston posted a comment a little while ago regarding yesterday's Los Angeles Times story in which he was quoted as saying:
"I wouldn't want to stop in Stanton, much less patrol it."
Here is Councilman Eggleston's response:
I wish to thank the OCBlog for the opportunity of posting a response. I was mis-quoted by an LA Times reporter. That is not what I said and the reporter is well aware of it. I would never slam another city. My apologies to the residents of Stanton.
Lesson: Do not co-operate with LA Times reporters as they are not trustworthy. I have dealt with Orange County Register reporters and they are of the highest quality.

Council member
San Clemente
UPDATE (4:23 p.m.): Gustavo Arellano followed up with the LAT reporter in question, who stands by his quotation of Eggleston. You can read about it on The Blotter.
When in doubt or in trouble, kick the LA Times. Did Nancy Padberg write that one for you? If you didn't say it what DID you say?
Why apologize if you din't say it?
Look forward to the letter to the untrustworthy LA Times demanding a retraction.

I'd more readily believe the good Councilman is he could tell us what he DID say.
Claiming you were misquoted isn't credible unless you can state what you actually said.

So what was the "real" quote?
Posted by: DanGarion | December 29, 2006 at 02:01 PM
Okay, Wayne: The Times reporter is sticking by his story. So what did you say? Better respond, or you'll look like a bigger fool.

If I was Wayne I wouldn't respond until the reporter releases his notes. The reporter's excuse is weak.

Spill it, Wayne!

The reporter doesn't have an "excuse." He's not saying his dog ate his notebook; he's saying he didn't misquote the guy. No excuse needed. Eggleston's the one who's making excuses.

The reporter is falling back on the editor's excuse of not releasing notes. Wayne said he was misquoted, the reporters said he was not. Let's see the notes...which means nothing now as the notes can change.

The word of a politician against the word of a newspaper reporter.
Who would you believe?
Hum.....
Never mind.

Stanton, I can't think of any reason why anybody would want to live there let alone drive through it.

Sounds like putting ones foot in ones mouth is commonplace in San Clemente.
Posted by: | December 30, 2006 at 03:22 AM
The Councilman should just say it was a "botched joke" and move on.
Posted by: | December 30, 2006 at 09:45 AM
Seriously people! You sound like over-sensitive, whiney Democrats. Stanton is what it is. With few exceptions, one doesn't live or work in Stanton unless one's options are limited. Wayne should just say: "Yeh, I said it."
Posted by: | December 30, 2006 at 09:56 AM
Please do, Mr. Eggleston.

What's the beef? Stanton has huge crime numbers compared to south OC. The city has come a long way over the last ten years, but it is still not a tourist destination, nor will it ever be.
Eggleston should have stood by his comments. He should have just said he was just joking. You cannot infer tone from text...

Two shootings in Stanton stun, sadden neighborhood
By RICHARD CHANG
The Orange County Register
STANTON – Neighbors were rattled after two people were shot within blocks of each other early Saturday, leaving one man dead.
A 21-year-old male died at the scene between midnight and 1 a.m. on the 11800 block of Santa Maria Street near Santa Gertrudes Avenue, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.
Neighbors said they heard loud music from a house and fighting outside late Friday, which led to an initial visit by sheriff's deputies. After the officers left, the party and fighting resumed, and then a shot rang out.
"At first we thought it was fireworks," said Jose Mendez, 19. "But I didn't want to go outside."
Sheriff's deputies were also looking into a second shooting that occurred nearby, reported about an hour later. A 17-year-old male suffered a nonlife-threatening wound and went to a hospital, Lt. Ted Boyne said.
The Sheriff's Department is investigating the cases and would not disclose the names of the victims or any possible suspects. By Saturday evening, investigators could not determine whether the shootings were related or gang-connected, Lt. Hayward Miller said.
Deputies blocked off a section of the street Saturday morning. In the afternoon, neighbors expressed sadness and frustration with the violence on their unpretentious, tree-lined street.
"It's kind of sad that this happens in our neighborhood," said Manuel Chavez, 53, who has owned a home on Santa Maria Street for 26 years.
"There's nothing we can do. We're scared. We're scared that this happens here. We're concerned about our safety. It's usually pretty normal, pretty quiet."
Jerry Arebalo, 63, blamed the Sheriff's Department, which is contracted to patrol the city. Stanton does not have its own police department.
"We called the (deputies) earlier and they came and they didn't do anything," said the 50-year Stanton resident. "If they had stuck around, none of this would have happened. I don't feel the (deputies) did anything bright at all."
Miller confirmed that deputies visited the site before the shootings occurred. But he declined to make a comment or connection between the party and the shootings.

Not a tourist destination? Jubal said he visits Stanton. If it is good enough for him it must be good enough for everyone.

All I gotta say is that the roast chicken at Park Avenue restaurant is one of the best things ever.
