1st SD Watch: Carlos Scores Well on OC Pro-Family Guide

In the interest of creating a thorough virtual election experience for anyone NOT residing within the boundaries of the Orange County Board of Supervisors First District, I am posting below a voter guide distributed at several area churches yesterday before and after services. I think we at Red County/OC Blog have scanned and posted most (if not all) the mail and reported on various precinct walks, phone banks, yard sign programs, and candidate forums. Here is a sprinkle on top of that succulent layer cake.

This is a flyer that was compiled by the "Orange County Pro-Family Candidate Campaign," a group of social conservatives that have surveyed candidates at all levels for 15 years and dutifully reported on their responses ... or lack of them. This flyer has a disclaimer that it was "Paid for by Taxpayers for Local Control," a group that has been around since at least 1994 and involved in support of pro-family candidates and causes, including last year's Proposition 85.

Carlos Bustamante had the best score on this survey (the obviously "correct" answer from the sponsors' perspective is "YES" to all five questions). What may be surprising is that Janet Nguyen and Trung Nguyen - both campaigning as conservative Republicans - did NOT respond to the questionnaire. Both Nguyens have dedicated themselves to a full-time campaign and both have paid full-time staff, so can there be an excuse for not completing a simple 5-question survey from a respected conservative group?

How can you expect support from conservative voters when you show them no respect? I don't know how many of these flyers were distributed yesterday, but Bustamante is the clear beneficiary of anyone who took time to read it. I talked to at least a dozen people after Mass that may have been motivated by the flyer to vote for Carlos ... and that was only one Mass at one Church.

Mark,

Give me a break. Maybe Trung didn't respond because he was never asked to respond. This group obviously knew who they wanted to support and made sure they did. It was the same with the CRA "endorsement" convention that never happened.

Oh please is right. I would bet that neither Nguyen was even sent this questionnaire. And it is funny how Bustamante was pro-choice and he opposed the marriage amendment a couple of years ago and now he is supposedly some big conservatve. What a joke.

mark--see my post below. This "group" is like the Independent Democrats for Bustamante---only they have been around longer. No accountability, no identification, no nothing. When Jubal and others take aim at restrictive campaign laws they make a decent point by saying campaign disclosure is whats most important. Transparancy. Here you have nothing.

I talked to one campaign that never got this.
I have talked to candidates who have filled it out in the past and heard nothing.Even when their answers were acceptable.

And you neglected to point out that they are trespassing on church property. My friends parish priest had them removed. I guess the end justifies the means for this crowd.

At least two of the Republican candidates did NOT get this survey. There is nothing Christian about this group and Churches should not allow them on their church campuses. Carlos is a nominal Catholic and will tell people what they want to hear.

What a surprise, all the usual suspects are "crowing" about this one because their candidates were too cowardly to stand up and tell people what they really believe.

I commend Carlos Bustamante for answering the questionaire and rightfully receiving the respect and endorsement of this conservative group. God Bless you Carlos!

What a joke. Seriously, you really ought to think twice before using the phrase "Carlos scores well," particularly when you are referring to pro-family issues.

Art, just cause you're not getting any is no reason to be cranky.

So does this still mean that Bustamante is the "Independent Democratic" choice?

I'm wondering, 'cuz this doesn't sound all that "Independent" OR "Democratic" to me.

; )

Come on guys! So many of you are insiders and know campaign tricks, why are you so surprised? This is nothing different than what usually goes on in a hot race. People make up whatever they want and send it out, hoping some voters will think it's legitimate and means something. This is no different than making up new PAC's with great sounding names or recycling old PAC's in new races.

And putting flyer's on cars in Church parking lot's, or handing them out after services, the Sunday before an election is nothing new either. It's been done many times, especially in Santa Ana. They're have even been some Priests tell parishioners who to vote for! This is Santa Ana politics in its pure form!

Morning coffee---Just because its done does not make it right. I only bring up the trespassing issue because some conservatives like to talk about private property rights but disregard them when it suits their fancy(Of course Dems often go right to disregarding them without the KY jelly, but thats another post).

The pastors and priests I've talked to have no problem with people leafletting on sidewalks, they just don't want people leafletting on their property. They allow distribution of material they approve of(like the Prop 85 lit)but not these outside political flyers. And thats their right. I've yet to hear a priest tell a parishioner who to vote for...if they did they could put at risk the tax exempt status of the church.

Br-

I never said it was right. I said that so many posters here are insiders, and they know this is part and parcel of elections...especially in Santa Ana. I love to hear their outraged indignation (both sides) when the other guy does the same thing their guy did last cycle...or something they haven't had time to do this cycle.

And as far as the Church thing goes, you obviously haven't spent any time in some of the Central Santa Ana parishes the Sunday before an election. In some cases, a couple of Sunday's before an election. Again, I don't think it's right. I'm just providing a reality check.
