Sheriff Carona Discusses Criminal Alien Screening At Los Amigos Meeting
In addition to kicking-off the AUHSD special election petition drive, Wednesday morning's Los Amigos of Orange County meeting also hosted Sheriff Mike Carona. Carona, accompanied by Undersheriff Joanne Galinski, discussed the OCSD's program of screening arrestees (felony and some misdemeanors) for criminal illegal aliens -- a program that has, as readers know, been dogged by some controversy.
Since I had the Red County UnSteadiCam at the ready, I shot video of his talk and the Q & A for readers enjoyment (or displeasure, as the case may be with some).
Excellent presentation by Sheriff Carona and his Under Sheriff. Her parents are from Mexico.
Lou Correa in the audience asks a question about whether Costa Mesa automatically turns over the ICE arrestees to OC, and Carona says no, they can book them there if they want but ICE can handle it directly from Costa Mesa. That takes some load off of our County system; I'd like to see all cities do what Costa Mesa is doing.
One guy was worried about children being traumatized when their parents are arrested. Carona explains that they ONLY go out and invite ICE IF THEY HAVE A WARRANT for an actual suspicion of a crime, not just if someone is suspected of being illegal.
It is amazing to me that anyone even has a problem with it. What part of "illegal" do we not understand?
